The History of Hotel Sutter

In 1851, where Hotel Sutter now stands, the American House hotel was built and became very well-known under the direction of Dwight Crandall.  At the time it also served as an office and stage shop for the Adams & Company Express, one of the first express companies established in California, preceding Wells Fargo and Company.  On September 9, 1865 when a fire swept through Sutter Creek’s business district burning the hotel to the ground.

The hotel was later rebuilt and has operated over the years as the American Exchange Hotel, the Belotti Inn and now under new-ownership and management, Hotel Sutter.  The hotel’s rich past still comes alive through its brick structure that takes on the sophisticated elegance and amenities designed for today’s modern guest.

So rich in history, Hotel Sutter hosts visitors from all over who want to experience the historical landmarks, outdoor recreational activities, award-winning wineries and quaint restaurants and boutiques found in Sutter Creek. The hotel offers 21 beautifully appointed guest rooms and state-of-the-art meeting space, accommodating up to 75-100 people.
